Who Needs Face Fit Testing?
Fit testing is an essential safety requirement for various professionals who rely on respirators in their work environment. This includes a wide range of occupations where individuals are exposed to airborne contaminants or hazardous atmospheres. Key groups that typically require fit testing include:

Construction & Industrial Workers

Health Care Workers
Are you a healthcare professional working directly with patients or handling specimens in a laboratory? Your role in healthcare is crucial, but it also exposes you to airborne pathogens and harmful substances. Don’t compromise on safety schedule your fit test today.

Emergency Responders
Are you an emergency responder facing exposure to smoke, hazardous fumes, or chemical spills during your response activities? Ensure your respiratory protection is up to the task by undergoing fit testing.
Why Fit Testing Matters
The significance of Face Fit Testing cannot be overstated. As prescribed by the Australian Standard [AS/NZS 1715.S2 (2.6)], annual fit testing is a crucial step for wearers of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) with close-fitting face masks. This testing ensures that the masks effectively seal against the face, providing adequate protection against harmful airborne particles.

Protection
Fit testing ensures that respiratory protective equipment (RPE) properly seals against the face, providing effective protection against harmful airborne particles and contaminants.

Compliance
Fit testing is often a regulatory requirement in industries where workers are exposed to respiratory hazards, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations.

Accuracy
Fit testing verifies the effectiveness of RPE by objectively assessing its fit on an individual, ensuring that it meets the necessary safety standards.

Prevention
Properly fitted RPE prevents inhalation of hazardous substances, reducing the risk of respiratory illnesses and injuries among workers.

What are the two types of fit testing?
There are two types of fit tests: qualitative and quantitative. Understanding the differences between Quantitative and Qualitative Fit Testing can help you make informed decisions about your respiratory protection program. Here’s a breakdown:
Quantitative Method:
- Accuracy: Provides an accurate and defensible metric.
- Objective: Offers a real, objective metric that can’t be influenced by the test subject.
- Efficiency: Faster process, typically taking less than 3 minutes per test.
- No Hood Required: Does not require the use of a hood or toxic challenge agent.
- Verification: Includes a verification check for instrument performance, providing defensible proof.
Qualitative Method:
- Accuracy: Subjective and not accurate.
- Influence: Test subject responses can be influenced, leading to inaccurate results.
- Duration: Typically takes about 23 minutes for an OSHA-compliant fit test.
- Challenge Agents: Can be claustrophobic and may involve the use of potentially carcinogenic challenge agents.
- Verification: Results aren’t verified, lacking defensible proof.
Choosing the right fit testing method is crucial for ensuring the effectiveness of your respiratory protection program. At Intuitive Fit Testing, we specialise in Quantitative Fit Testing, offering accurate and efficient testing services that prioritise your workers’ safety.
Why must I be clean shaven?
Workers must take all necessary steps to ensure the proper fit and use of respirators. When wearing tight-fitting respirators, workers must ensure an effective face seal. This means being clean-shaven or only having facial hair that doesn’t interfere with the fitting surfaces and the valve of the respirator.
For workers who want to keep facial hair that may interfere with the operation or proper fit of tightfitting respirators, a powered air purifying respirator with a loose hood will provide the protection needed.
How often does fit testing need to be done?
Fit testing is ongoing requirement to ensure continuous respiratory protection. We recommend the below frequency for fit testing:
Initial Testing:
It is crucial to have a fit test when you’re first issued a respirator. An initial test ensures that the specific make, model, and size of the respirator you’ve been issued will provide a proper seal and adequate respiratory protection.
Annual Testing:
In compliance with the Australian Standard [AS/NZS 1715.S2 (2.6)], annual fit testing should be conducted to ensure that a respirator still fits effectively. Annual testing will account for changes in facial structure, respirator condition and workplace exposure levels. Because each brand, model, and size of respirators will fit slightly differently, you should be fit tested every time you wear a new model, manufacturer type/brand, or size.
When you change to a different respirator type:
To ensure your new respirator fits properly and there is a correct seal a new fit test is recommended. Different models and sizes can fit differently, so it’s essential to verify that the new respirator provides an effective seal.
If your facial features have changed:
Weight fluctuations, dental work, facial surgery, or any other changes that might alter how your respirator fits. It’s important to conduct a new fit test to ensure continued effectiveness if you have had significant changes to your facial features.
How do you maintain a respirator mask?
To maintain face masks effectively, it’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Typically, washing with a mild dish detergent or a combination of detergent and disinfectant is recommended. Use warm water (49-60ºC) and a brush to clean the mask thoroughly. After washing, rinse with clean water or use a disinfectant followed by a rinse with clean water. Additionally, remember to regularly replace parts such as valves and gaskets to ensure optimal performance and protection.
